INVITED PLAYERS

Ben Thornton

Ben was an invited player for the club in the 1993 and 1994 seasons.
Ben is easily the tallest player the club has had play for them with a height over 2.08cm.
Ben from the Waikato University RFC played lock and won a ton of the ball in the then no lifting days.
Ben was a fluent speaker of Japanese which was a great asset for the club for communication between the players.
He also worked for the Sapporo NZ Society, returned to NZ in the late nineties where he now runs a very successful tourism company.

Anthony Trotter

AT comes from that marvellous breeding ground of immense rugby talent St John`s College in Hamilton.
Having immense talent along with the likes of Marty Holah, Wayne Simeon and at least a couple of others we knew AT was going to produce the goods at halfback for the Barbarians.
Blessed with a pass of extreme pace he ignited our backline with quick ball. AT and Nathan Prestidge were an excellent pairing for the team, their good understanding of each others play helping the team significantly.

Once AT, a keen trainer and gym goer was trying to buff himself for the rugby season, he took a banned fat loss substance called hydroxy cut that really messed with his lid when combined with a very hot day at Nopporo one game.
With very shaky legs and pupils in a distressed state he had to leave the field. All the boys slowed down with their hydroxy cut intake before matches after that.

AT is a top bloke and team man, always adding humour with a good story.
He once even created his own Japanese word "bukachi" meaning to give oneself entirely to the spirit of a match.
He had trouble convincing the Japanese players of it`s legitimacy with some shortcomings in explaining it`s kanji components but the foreigners in the team embraced the word and would often mutter it to themselves in challenging circumstances.
